So How are we going to utilize this site?
Hello Gandalff and other members,
I know, it sounds like a rhetorical question. I wondered if it were going to be an "open forum free for all" such as ASP on usernet or if it were going to be more "structured" like other forums, with topic areas and the like.
There seems to be a lot of confusion as to exactly what one is referring too when one mentions "ASP" anyway. Some think it's a "website" that they respond too using "google groups", others think it's the chat room on Undernet, others seem to think it's a "website" they look at with MS Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird while others think it's the website at the following URL http://www.aspipes.org/ To me, despite the obvious "semantic issues" ASP really is a community which utilizes all of the above and more. I have participated in various forums, and settings over the years and no longer participate in some of them.
Allowing that Gandalff had something in mind, may have others working "behind the scenes" to flesh things out, I wonder as I suspect do others what form this new forum will take. It seems obvious enough that it will be moderated (which I have no problem with) it may help get rid of the ad's, spam, and other trash which clog up some other formats out there. It may help limit the "flame wars" so rampant on usernet.
Lets share some ideas, and allow Gandalff some time to respond and see how this all get "fleshed out"

Re: So How are we going to utilize this site?
Yes, I agree with you 100%. It would be great if we could really get this site going. I could add other "widgets" as they call them, like the clock for example.
Theres quite a lot that can be added in that respect, but I don't suppose everybody would like that idea. I could for example put a darts game on the site. lol. its open for discussions and ideas.
With regard to moderators, @I'm not really sure what to to here. If you want to have the site moderated, what say I start a poll, where you could nominate the moderators yourselves. I shall leave that up to you.
My main interest in making this site was to include a "live" chat room , I thought that would be nice.
Anyway, ANY ideas or suggestions you have, please tell me, either on here on the messages or by PM
Most of all, enjoy your stay here
regards
Gandalff

Re: So How are we going to utilize this site?
Hi Gandalff,
Maybe I made an assumption about the site being moderated, as I see that there is a " moderators category" and "group" under user groups. My personal feeling is that while troublesome for some folks, I think "moderated forums" have cleaner content. By that I mean far less spam, ads and flame war type of content. I participate in a variety of forums, moderated and otherwise, about pipes and tobacco and other subjects. My person experience is that moderated forums work "better" and people are "better behaved". There can be any number of "subject headers" or "forum titles" or "sub forums" what ever the proper term might be. You could have a forum just for "off color" jokes where the "rules" are more relaxed.
I may be way off base, people might not want any moderation, and actually enjoy having more places where they can bleat and beat their chests like what goes on in ASP on usernet. I don't know, I mainly seek out places on the net where I can participate in whatever activity with persons of like minds, without all the rancor which tends to occur on usernet

Re: So How are we going to utilize this site?
Good Point Kilted1.
I shall make more "modules available as you suggested (good idea that) but I'm just off to work, but will sort it soon as I get home.
As it stands at the moment, I am the only moderator, in the sense that I am the Administrator (webmaster) wayyyy, don't that sound posh lol.
but when I'm signed in as gandalff I have no adminstrator or moderator staus, I am just a member like anyone else.
Obviously if I were to find a real trouble maker or spammer I would log in as admin and block the IP and mac address of the user.
But I have created this site for all of you, and do not wish to interfere with the "general" discussions, this is simply because I never used to post in asp on the yahoo groups. I used to read the messages, yes. and really enjoyed them. I would honestly prefer it if a few of the well know users/members would actually "moderate" the site.
So what I suggest is, that I create a poll/vote where members can nominate moderators, I shall see if I can get it to work where your nominations are anonymous. If I am unable to do that, we have two options, 1- you could PM the administrator (me) lol, or we could leave it for say, a month or two and the choose moderators out of the top posters, or something like that.
Anyway, work calls
regards
Gandalff
