Jan Zeman Pipes

Post  kilted1 on Fri Aug 15, 2008 2:05 pm

I stumbled across Jan Zeman's site ( http://www.zemanpipes.com/ ) one evening and was instantly "taken" with the fine hand crafted pipes he had to offer at very competitive prices. I saved up my pennies and pulled the trigger on a YPSC 2003 Club Pipe.

When it arrived (about 1 week later, a short time from New Zealand to Dallas, Tx) I was thrilled with the pipe! Yeah, he calls it a "bulldog shape" which to my mind is a bit of a stretch. It seems a combination between a bulldog and a volcano, no matter, it looks fantastic and feels great in my hand. The execution is flawless, the hand cut Vulcanite stem fitting perfectly, the mortise and tenon work are precise, the silver work is tight and crisp. In short much more in a hand made pipe than I ever expected for the price. It smokes like a champ.

I've since purchased another this time a YPSC Club, YPSC 2004 Club Pipe but a one of a kind of this year. Jan had purchased a new sand blaster and was 'checking it out' and blasted several pipes for 'practice'. I saw it offered on the site and nailed it. Again, the price vs. quality was much more than I expected. Everything about this pipe was precise and spot on. It too smokes like a champ.

Jan has many pipes that interest me, would that we could purchase every pipe that appeals to us.

I was a member of the Atlanta, Ga pipe smokers club for a time when I lived closer to Atlanta. One of the members there is an enthusiastic collector of Jan Zeman pipes and owns several high grade 'Signature' pipes. I've handled several, even tried to sneak out the door with one (just kidding) and I can tell you, for the price, in high grades Jan's pipes are very competitive with anyone you've ever heard of.

Yes his shape interpretations are a little 'different' and he has invented a few 'shapes' and styles all his own. I find his series based upon sea shells native to New Zealand very interesting indeed.

Not to be missed are the "Friends Pipes". I've yet to purchase one of my own, however the ones I've seen and held (owned by friends) lead me to conclude these pipes from the Czech Republic are very fine pipes for very little brass.

Jan's service and promptness in delivery rivals anyone I've ever done business with, both times his orders arrived in LESS time than many vendors in the USA!
